The aim of this work is to illustrate the relationship between industrial land usage and urban ecology, to blur the line between what we see as natural vs. unnatural. With each iteration of this work there is a different flora entwining and living within the ceramic fossils of industrial relics.

Artist Statement:

I focus my art practice primarily on ceramic sculptures that are heavily influenced by architectural decay and urban overgrowth. The artwork I create is often inspired by the patterns and systems of the human-built world around us. Much of my work lies in the realm of functional pottery, however there are many series where the concept and artistic form of the work outshine the traditional "function" of the ware. I believe the field of ceramics blurs the connection between our human and natural world. Creating pieces that last for millennia, while simultaneously bringing joy to others through daily use of a functional object is a driving force behind my work. I am committed to spreading slower living, conscious consumption and building community within our increasingly isolating and commodity driven American society. To me, valuing handmade goods and appreciating the interaction with others that occurs when using a handmade object is intrinsic to fostering a sense of connection and compassion for our fellow people. Working with ceramic and many found materials, natural or man-made, I aim to spark conversations and create questions about the current path of our consumption driven culture which is marching us towards an imminent climate disaster.
