Those of you familiar with my work know that I have been fascinated with trains as a visual subject for many years. In July of 2019 I traveled to Bolivia expressly to see the renowned “Train Graveyard” on Bolivia’s high salt flats (Salar de Uyuni).
Steam engines have been sitting there since very early in the 20thCentury (1900-1910) when a project o expand the train network out of Uyuni was abandoned. The high altitude (14,000 feet) and salt winds have eroded and corroded the structures over the years into (for me) beautiful objects. Graffiti has (for me) only enhanced their magic. This series of paintings derives from those images. There are more paintings to come.
