The Snowdrop Bowl was hand-built from stoneware clay and painted with underglaze. Dots and dashes enhance the bowl with visual and physical texture.

Artist Statement:

My family has a long tradition of making objects by hand. I watched my grandfather transform inexpensive wood into useful furniture. He repurposed local barn wood into heirloom picture frames and constructed scale replica buildings from his community using scavenged scraps. When I hold those objects now, I realize he saw each piece of wood as an opportunity and challenge. I am a hand-builder and use mid-fire stoneware. I am captivated by the clay's ability to become something new, over and over again. I have a great respect for the surprises and timing involved with hand-building. Working in my small, backyard studio allows me the opportunity to start and stop as needed. I paint each piece with underglaze, looking for a balance between the subject matter and form. I am a Master Naturalist and appreciate the small objects I discover in nature. I enjoy collecting dried plant material and dead insects to use as inspiration for imagery. I don't attempt to recreate with scientific accuracy, but find great satisfaction in studying a natural object, simplifying and stylizing it. Art Nouveau and Celtic design are inspirational to me because of their connection to the natural world.
