Curney Nuffer

Born in the Shenandoah Valley, Curney began his art education through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School and Virginia Commonwealth University.  He also studied with portrait artist Eloise Atkinson and continues to study with graduates of the prestigious Surikov Institute, founded in 1851 in Moscow, Russia.

"Although a portrait painter by vocation, Curney Nuffer is best known for his inspiration painting classes he teaches in Richmond.  Curney is someone who will set up a sun-splashed still life outdoors and bring a cake to place in it - true dedication!  His enthusiasm is contagious.  He works en plein air as well as still life and landscape and truly just loves to paint.  His style reflects his extensive work with Moscow's Surikov Institute Painters." - Laura Loe, artist and owner of Nimrod Hall Summer Art Program in Bath County, Virginia, 2014.

He has spent 23 years perfecting his 3-hour Portrait Paintings. You may schedule a sitting with Curney by calling the Crossroads Art Center at 804.278.8950 with your contact information.

Curney's studio is located at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, and he also teaches classes at Crossroads Art Center.  Curney will call and schedule a session with you either at the center or his studio.

Beginners, intermediate and advanced levels are welcome. Classes are primarily focused on oil painting, but Curney welcomes artists who work in acrylic and watercolor. The use of oil paint — from brushes and canvases to palette and technique — is the emphasis in these classes. Curney will demonstrate how the use of a limited palette emphasizes the importance of color, value, intensity, and placement of paint. Composition and the use of photos versus using still-life setups and plein air landscapes will be discussed. Demos and exercises are combined with painting time, or artists have the option to paint on their own with help from Curney throughout the class.
